Information on Bremer Kluten – History and Tradition
Bremer Kluten are among the most time-honored confectionery specialties of the Hanseatic City of Bremen. Their history dates back to the 19th century. According to tradition, Bremer Kluten were first produced in Bremen in 1865. This means the little treat has a tradition spanning over 160 years. The characteristic rectangular pieces consist of fine peppermint fondant, lightly candied with sugar and half-coated in dark chocolate. Their shape is reminiscent of small dominoes. As early as the 19th century, Kluten were known as a sweet specialty in Bremen. Over time, they became an integral part of Bremen’s confectionery tradition and a popular souvenir from the Hanseatic city.
Kluten are also associated with Bremen’s historic Freimarkt and the Bremen Christmas Market. To this day, they are sold in Bremen’s pastry shops and are considered a piece of the region’s culinary history. The traditional production method is upheld by the Schnoorkonditorei in Bremen, among others.
